Start out with a nice comfortable guitar to match the size of the student. Don’t spend more than $200 (street price) for a beginner student guitar. If the student decides against playing the guitar, you will not have wasted too much money. Beginner students are not too careful about the scratching or banging around the guitar when playing or transporting it from place to place. Once the student has played for a while, they will develop their own taste as to what they are looking for in a guitar.
Based on my experience with the city public school system and private students, it is better to get a basic starter guitar for the first one. It may be cheaper to buy used and decide later which unit is best suited for the student.
Classical guitars use nylon based strings and are easier on the fingers. Steel string guitars cause more discomfort to the finger tips until the student forms enough dead skin on the tips. The sound of steel is very different from nylon and you must hear both to see which the student likes and get that guitar. You can NOT really change a guitar from nylon to steel. If he likes steel than you will need to choose between acoustic or straight electric. Most schools will start with a classical nylon guitar.
