STICKING OR SLIPPING PEGS

Tuesday, October 15th, 2013

When you purchase a new violin, especially a student violin, it is a good idea to check out all four pegs. Make sure they turn smoothly in the peg box and do not slip or stick. If you find that they don’t perform smoothly, have the resident Luthier or repair person remove the pegs from the peg box. The Luthier should inspect the peg as well as the peg box for any irregularities. If no problems are found, then he/she should use special peg lubricant on the pegs (where the peg sits inside the peg box) and reinsert the peg into the violin. The pegs should be rotated gently (but firmly) in the peg box to get the lubricant into the needed areas.
NEVER use general lubricant for this purpose.
Happy fiddling!
