Dare to Think!

I WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY THE ACOUSTIC GUITAR, BUT HOLDING THE STRINGS HURTS MY FINGERS. WHAT CAN I DO TO TOUGHEN THEM UP?

If your guitar is steel string, you can go down to a softer string like silk strings. If it is really bad, try switching to nylon soft strings with ball ends. The sound and quality will be reduced but you can still play until you start building up the calluses. Then slowly work to silk steel string and finally to regular strings. Make sure your action is as low as possible to reduce the pressure on the fingers. Different strings may be somewhat softer as well. Sam Ash or Guitar Center may have softer strings as well.

If you are already playing a nylon classical guitar, then try a string with a lighter tension.
